Forget New Year's Resolutions! -A Better Way to Reach Your Organizing Goals

Why I Hate New Years Resolutions

Other than taking down my Christmas tree and ornaments by January 3rd, I make no New Years Resolutions. In fact, I hate them.

Maybe it’s because I have always been a bit of a non-conformist or maybe it’s because as a mom and former teacher, I still mentally run on a school calendar year mindset.

But mostly it’s because I don’t want to do a damn thing in January! It’s cold, it’s dark, and I had to put away all my warm twinkly lights of Christmas. Once those decorations are stored away, all the miseries of winter come crashing in and I just want to hide under a heated blanket until Spring.

So while I know in January what I would like to accomplish and the habits I’d like to change in the New Year, I have learned over my 40+ years that, for me, change is hard when it is 30 degrees out and dark at 5pm, unless that is, my desired change involves drinking lots of red wine every night. That one I think I could manage with unusual consistency!

Instead I use the New Year to reflect on all the things I learned and the ways I grew in the previous year----and I write them down in my Planner on journal pages. I believe it is good to take stock not only of major events in your life, but also your accomplishments and growth.

I also write down goals of what I hope to have accomplished by the end of the New Year, such as lose 10 lbs, create a course, teach my daughter to drive.

Then I brainstorm some actions I could take that would get me to success.

- Lose 10 lbs: Only eat rice, bread, or pasta 2x a week max. Keep track on a calendar on the fridge. Have a glass of sparkling water before any wine is allowed.

- Spend 2 hours every morning on course creation (writing, creating, editing, filming).

- Hire a driving company to teach my daughter to drive (I’m too much of a Nervous Nelly to do it myself.)

But I don’t put pressure on myself to start all these things right away. As long as I keep them front and center, I know I will do them, or try to anyway. I know that if I do it in Spring when the sun stays out a little longer and the air is a little warmer, I will be much more successful than if I try anything in the bitterness of January. I’m more motivated in Spring, so that is my start date for getting my rear in gear.
